As consumers, much of our daily life requires and depends on a reliable connection to the Internet. We use it for email, shopping, banking, streaming, research, entertainment and much more. Most of us don’t know the ins and outs of how this ever-changing technology works, but we know we need it, and we need it to be FAST. Currently, there is a lot of hype about One GIG speeds, but what does that mean and what can One GIG do for me as a consumer?
One GIG Internet literally means that you are downloading 1,000,000,000 bits per second or 1,000 megabits per second. That’s 100 times faster than the average Internet speed in the United States. One GIG speeds run on a fiber-optic line, which is capable of much higher speeds than the traditional copper lines of most DSL and cable connections.
These fiber-optic lines are the reason that One GIG speeds are not widely available today since most Internet service providers must place new fiber-optic lines to offer these speeds. Fiber-optic lines offer many benefits to consumers. They are obviously able to transmit data much faster and over greater distances. Fiber is also immune to many types of interference, such as power outages, nearby power lines and high-voltage electrical equipment. Also, fiber connections offer symmetrical speeds, meaning that your upload and download speeds are the same. This is different from traditional cable and DSL providers, where asymmetrical speeds typically offer fast downloads and slow uploads.
Now that we know that One GIG is lightning-fast and has superior technology, let’s take a look at how a One GIG connection can benefit you as a consumer. The chart below provides a comparison of different speeds and download times:
Quite the difference, right? Imagine that you’re sitting down with the family to watch a movie, only to find out you have to wait 72 minutes for it to download? 25 seconds sounds a lot better! That’s less time than it takes to make microwave popcorn!
What’s the downside to One GIG Internet? Do a quick search and you’ll find that the biggest drawback is the lack of availability in the U.S. Providers are working hard to add fiber-optics, and neighborhoods and cities are beginning to see the benefits. Windstream is committed to providing our customers with the most advanced products and services.
One GIG Internet is already available in several markets within our footprint, and our technicians are working diligently to add fiber-optics to more areas every day. We do this because our customers demand faster speeds and a more reliable network. Find out if your area is eligible for One GIG speeds at windstream.com/gig.
